Abraham Clarke was born in 1893 (Mildenhall Q2-1893 4A:799), son of Albert Charles and Vina Elizabeth CLARKE (née FULLER).
1901 census...Aged 8, he was at Cook's Drove, Mildenhall with his father Albert CLARKE [41] farmer; his mother Vina [39]; sisters Florence [17], Nellie [12], Emma [11], Aggie [9] and Mabel [3]; brothers Albert [16] and Richard [14] both working on family farm. All born in Mildenhall. 1911 census...Aged 18, he was working on the farm at Alder Farm, Riverside, West Row Fen via Isleham, with his parents, sisters Florence, Emma, Agnes, and Mabel; brother Wilfred [8] born Mildenhall. One of the ten children had died. His death was in the Military Hospital, Nottingham Q3-1918 7B:419. |

Abraham enlisted in Ipswich. His Army service records have not been found. His medal index card has not been found, but this would be due to no overseas service, him being in the Training Reserves still.
Just to confuse the unit situation, 20th Training Reserve Brigade 87th 21st (Reserve) Bn, the Durham Light Infantry Hornsea TR/5 became "D" Bn MGC The 20th TR Brigade also absorbed the 33rd and 34th Northumberland Fusiliers and the 13th Durham Light Infantry. By May 1917 the brigade had moved to Catterick and became dedicated to receiving recruits who would be allotted to the Machine Gun Corps. It moved again, to Clipstone, in early 1918 and was then retitled as 1st Training Brigade, Machine Gun Corps. The cap badge situation was just as confused as at one time they wore a general service button on a red disc. later replaced by the number of their battalion and TR shoulder flashes.
